Dear Minister Moore:
I am writing to add my voice to those who are seriously concerned about what is happening at Library and Archives Canada. Canadians – be they researchers, authors, documentarians, historians, families tracking their genealogies, librarians, francophone or Indigenous community members – have come to rely upon the services and collections offered by Libraries and Archives Canada.
Today, however, the ability of LAC to fulfill its mandate is at risk. Badly conceived restructuring, a narrowing of its mandate, and financial cutbacks are undermining LAC’s ability to acquire, preserve and make publicly accessible Canada’s full documentary heritage. Unless something is done soon, Canadians are at risk of losing key parts of their historical and cultural record.
We respectfully urge you to take the following actions:
<ul>
 <li>Amend the Library and Archives of Canada Act to remove any ambiguity about LAC's mandate to maintain a comprehensive collection of Canada’s documentary heritage;</li>
 <li>Ensure funding required to fulfill this mandate;</li>
 <li>Restore LAC’s full acquisition of published material and archival acquisitions;</li>
 <li>Restore public services, including access to archivists and librarians; access to the general reference collection; and re-establishment of specialist archivist positions; and</li>
 <li>End fragmentation of collections resulting from decentralization and partnerships.</li>
</ul>
Preservation of our country’s heritage is not something we can afford to sacrifice.
